Canadian Men's National Soccer Team

Lead Analyst

January 2021 - December 2021

Overview

I served as Lead Analyst for the Men's Senior National Team during World Cup qualifying, working remotely between monthly international camps held globally. The role supported coaches and players directly in match preparation, review, and squad selection.

Match reporting

I built and maintained post-match dashboards using Python and Power BI, delivering analytical summaries to coaches and players by the morning following each match. I engineered the team's first data pipeline to ingest match event data and ensure reliable delivery under tight timelines.

Opposition & squad support

Opposition analysis focused on identifying tactical patterns, player tendencies, and areas where the team could adjust structure or personnel. I advised the Head Coach on formation selection, squad composition, and the evaluation of dual-national players.

Culture & camp support

I introduced structured data analysis into an environment with no existing analytics infrastructure or budget, working closely with staff to improve statistical literacy and establish shared language around performance.

In addition to analytical responsibilities, I filmed and edited training and match footage, produced video content for coaches and players, built presentation materials, and supported meetings during camps. I also worked with video analysts to integrate video and data workflows.

Outcome

During qualifying, the team consistently exceeded performance expectations, progressed rapidly in world rankings, and qualified for the 2022 World Cup.
